The Institute for Medicine has reported that the growth in the cost of health insurance has created a gap in purchasing ability that has added about 1 million people a year to the ranks of the uninsured. It is a national tragedy that 70% of the over 45 million uninsured Americans are employed and trying to support their families without a safety net for either the cost of routine medical/dental care or a catastrophic health care event.
Even those fortunate to have some form of health care coverage are experiencing a phenomenon known as "cost shifting". Their employers are looking for ways to reduce the staggering burden of healthcare insurance premiums. The solutions often involve asking employees to share more of the load in one way or another. Among the most common ways to do this are increasing deductibles and co payments in addition to raising employee contributions to the premium. Restricting or eliminating certain benefits is also a common strategy. The result is under insurance.
What is needed to reverse this trend is to provide a new model for healthcare access thast redefines the coverage for the majority of Americans who cannot afford to pay for healthcare insurance as it is presently configured. People cannot afford the national average cost of $10,000 a year for family major medical coverage.
This new model for affordable healthcare access combines clinical management and healthcare advocacy to help families become better, more informed consumers. This is accomplished by providing them with choices of providers and direct assistance in reducing their out of pocket expenses. Only 4 out of 100 people will actually require hospitalization in any year and less than 1 in 100 will spend more than $20,000 for a single healthcare event until the last four months of life.
What about the thousands of dollars per year in routine medical expenses that a family will need to pay to keep healthy? These healthcare consumers need new tools for obtaining affordable healthcare, and an advocate to help them use these tools wisely.
These new products will use the following ingredients in new and innovative ways:
- Direct access to Physician networks for savings on out of pocket costs for routine medical expenses.
- Innovative Plan design with high deductibles and/or limited benefits to assist in covewring routine and semi catastrophic occurrences.
- Financial assistance and new payment methodologies for assistance in paying for medical care and facilitating prompt payment to the Provider.
- Simple and accessible Member and Provider education on how to use these new products with a "live voice" to provide assistance.
